Travels through green Lithuania: educational routes up to 5 km that must be visited

For those who want to actively spend time in nature and get to know the peculiarities of the Lithuanian landscape, we suggest visiting educational and educational trails in various corners of Lithuania. These trails will delight visitors of all ages with their diverse environment and are perfect for those who prefer short distances.

Aukštumala educational trail

Total distance - 2.4 km      Duration - 30 min Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.8

The educational trail is located in the Aukštumalė telemological reserve, where the greatest minds of the swamps study and document this special natural ecosystem. Most of the route runs along a narrow path of wooden planks, so it is not difficult to explore this place even with children. While walking here, you can think of the world of sci-fi - a huge, sponge-like glade and several randomly located lakes, although once the marsh was as much as 2,500 ha in area, currently only about 900 ha remain. The territory is also home to vipers, the only representatives of the venomous reptile class in Lithuania, so when driving with four-legged pets, you must take care of their safety and that of the vipers. Acquaintance with unusual flora and fauna unique to swamps is guaranteed in this place.

Jurkiškis stream educational trail

Total distance - 1.2 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.5

When visiting the Labanor region, it is worth visiting the educational trail along the Jurkiškis stream on the way. The trail requires a bit more uphill effort at the beginning, but overall it's not difficult to get through. Here in the middle of the trail, an interesting crossing over the stream awaits you and you will get to know the Jurkiški stone, also known as Puntuk's child. The trail is full of informative stands and other stimuli for your curiosity, they describe why this stream has the status of a mountain stream and what kind of nature surrounds it. On the second side of the trail, there is a fun walk across wooden bridges, so even though it is very short, it is really not bad.

Educational trail of Šauklii rockery

Total distance - 2 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.5

If you want to see the tundra, you don't have to travel very far, because Lithuania has its own real tundra in the Žemaitija region, the landscape of which is close to the one that prevailed after the Ice Age. On the Šauklii educational trail, you will see juniper trees as tall as a giraffe and boulders brought by the glacier from Finland and Sweden. The territory is fenced, in order to get to it you have to climb the stairs over the fence, back in 2015 a herd of mouflons was released here to look after the area, but at the moment it is not known how many of them are left in the enclosure, so the chance to see them is very slim.

Grabijolai boulder educational trail

Total distance - 4 km Duration - 2 hours. Complexity - Average visitor rating - 4.6

For those who want a more challenging challenge, the trail that leads from the ethnographic village of Grabijolai to the thickest oak in the Neries Regional Park is an excellent choice. You won't find wooden boardwalks here, as the entire trail leads through natural soil. Your legs will have to work harder when climbing hills and going down steep slopes, so it is necessary to take care of appropriate footwear here. It is true that the route is linear, so if you plan to return to where you came from, you will have to work twice as hard.

Kernavė educational-recreational trail

Total distance - 2.6 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.7

This place is one of those that make you fall in love with Lithuanian nature anew, when you can admire the wide-open landscape of the Neris River at the beginning of the trail, on the White Mountain. For this reason, this trail is also called the White Mountain Educational Trail. As you walk, you will get to know barrows that are at least a thousand years old, and when you are tired, you will find many places to rest here.

Kačėniškės mound educational trail

Total distance - 3 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.9

The best time to visit the Kačėniškė mound is in the middle of spring. Then the mountain meadow is covered with blooming flowers and a special view of the flourishing nature opens up from the top. We highly recommend taking a blanket, snacks and having a picnic (just don't make fires). The path to the mound leads through a forest and a swamp, there are a lot of stairs on the route, so the visit will definitely be more difficult for those with wheels. The place really amazes with its beauty and firmly claims the title of one of the most beautiful places in Lithuania.

Educational trail of wooden beekeeping

Total distance - 3 km Duration - 1.5 hours. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.0

For both shorter and longer walks - this place can satisfy both options. The educational trail itself is 3 kilometers long, but the trip can be started from the village of Musteika and the museum there, which are 5 kilometers from the beginning of the trail, so the total distance can reach even 13 kilometers. This is the only place where there are still surviving dreves - beehives built in tree trunks, this way of beekeeping is one of the oldest crafts and businesses, even mentioned in Iron Age monuments.

The small trail of Pageluvio Lake

Total distance - 3.2 km Duration - 1 hour. Complexity - Average visitor rating - 4.9

The trail in the Šiauliai region leads around Lake Geluva, through the Barsukynos oasis and mounds, so this trail is definitely not for those with weak legs. For those who don't know: an oasis is a narrow hill of sand and gravel, usually only a few meters wide, formed by the movement of glaciers. And it is called Barsukynos because of the community of badgers living in the area. Right here, if the hills are not enough for energy discharge, there is also the great Pageluvio lake trail and you can extend your route by another 4 kilometers.

Bijota-Širvintos forest educational trail

Total distance - 3.5 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.6

The trail between Dusios and Metelis lakes is a great additional entertainment when visiting the Dusios lake and the campsite. On your way, you will have the opportunity to get acquainted with another Lithuanian high bog and its unusual flora and fauna. In addition, if you have always dreamed of taking a photo on the water braids in the Maldives - here you will be able to fulfill this dream no worse, because the Dusios coast at the end of the route also offers such entertainment.

Educational trail of the Dubrava reserve region

Total distance - 3.9 km Duration - 1 hour. Difficulty - Easy Visitor rating - 4.6

The last trail we recommend also leads you to get to know the swamp, but it definitely has something new to offer. No economic activity has been carried out in the Dubrava reserve district for over 50 years, so the nature you will see is truly extraordinary. This place is home to plants such as the beetle-eating sunflower and the particularly poisonous marsh sedge.

When getting ready to travel - don't forget, it's always a good idea to take insect repellent, especially in warm weather, as well as suitable footwear and clothing. When visiting the educational trails, don't forget to respect nature, its inhabitants, and be sure to collect your trash after your visit! We hope you enjoy these trails as much as we did.
